In
this morning photograph the Everest Massif
with its many peaks is just right of center.
Mt. Everest itself has two peaks, Everest
(29,035', 8850) and South Peak (28,700',
8,748 m). In the north within the group
is Changtse (24,803', 7,560 m), in the
northwest, Khumbutse (21,867', 6,665 m),
just to the south Lhotse (27,940', 8516
m) and in the southwest, Nuptse (25,791',
7,861 m). Mt. Everest is distinguishable
by having its entire left (west) side
in shadow.
Cho Oyu and the Nangpai Gosum are clearly
visible as is the Nangpa La leading into
Tibet.
The main Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar
can be viewed as well as the Gokyo Valley
and the famous Ama Dablam.
To the west see Rolwaling with Gauri Shankar
and Menlung Tse and Tashi Laptsa pass
leading into Khumbu.
In the east Makalu and the mighty wall
of Kangchenjunga are in broad sunshine. |
