| A
closer view shows Lake Manasarowar (pear-shaped)
and Lake Rakshas (shaped like a champagne
glass) which are both 15,510' (4,727 m)
above sea level and about 17 miles (27
km) long. Nearby Mt. Kailas (22,028',
6714 m) has been a sacred pilgrimage site
for Buddhist, Hindu, and Bon-po adherants
for over 2000 years. Buddhists call Mt.
Kailas the "Navel of the World, the
Precious Jewel of Snow." Hinduism
holds Kailas to be the center of the world.
Southeast of the lakes is Gurla Mandhata,
the 14th highest peak in Asia at 25,355'
(7,728 m). |
